For this studio project, we investigated the concept of “architectural landscapism.” This concept is defined as the merging of architectural elements within the scale of a landscape. It would be the next evolutionary step in Koolhaas’ book “Small, Medium, Large, Extra Large.“ The idea of the project was to produce a ecumenopolis: a hypothetical world where people, animals and agriculture are all domesticated into one society.
The design process began by linking two of Koolhaas’ projects, ZKM and La Villette, to the 1909 theorem. We took the resulting information and applied systematic transformations. This produced a series of hybrid and scalar drawings. We then used specific elements and motifs from our drawings to form the base of our design.
The final design was a half-mile by five miles and broken into 10 distinct, but unified, parts. This is similar to Koolhaas’ Voluntary Prisoners of Architecture project. In addition to our design we developed a concept to describe a future vision of our world. My concept was a “dystopic warning.” This displayed the dangers of architecture when taken to the extreme. The design consisted of 10 communities. These communities oppress each other through the use of architecture.
The goal of this project was to create an architectural model that expressed this narrative.
